Claire Dove - Chief Executive of Liverpool based social enterprise Blackburne House
Claire’s career spans 30 years within the voluntary sector where she has had extensive experience of formal and informal education and training. Initially, Claire was involved in the setting up of South Liverpool Personnel (International Personnel) in the early 1970s, working for the Martin Luther King Foundation. She was a member of the ‘Black Women’s Liberation Movement’ and in the 1980s, helped set up Liverpool Black Sisters. After working for Plessey Communications as a regional manager, she took over as Director of the Charles Wootton College.
Claire has headed the Women’s Technology and Education Centre since its inception at the beginning of the 1980s and developed the strategic vision to take the organisation centre-stage by moving from rented space and relocating to Blackburne House, a Grade II listed building that underwent a £4m refurbishment. The Blackburne House Group is now one of Merseyside’s original and most successful social enterprises and officially designated Centre of Excellence.
Claire’s commitment to women’s education and equality of opportunity is reflected in the role she plays in many local and national organisations. She is currently Deputy Chair of the Greater Merseyside Learning and Skills Council, Board Member of the Mersey Partnership and Merseyside Connexions Service, is a member of the National Women’s Training Network and a Governor on the Corporation Board of Liverpool Community College. Claire is also a member of Merseyside Connexions Service and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
