First Step

In supporting babies and pre-school children with physical disabilties, First Step Opportunity Group offers more than just childcare. Understanding the need for holistic care, they combine this with a support network and information and advice for parents and families.

Established in 1988, First Step began by meeting one morning a week in a small church hall. The popularity of the service grew and they relocated to larger premises but their ability to respond to the real needs of their users meant demand soon increased, and once again they found themselves looking for a new home. A larger investment was needed to take this next step.

“Our accountant came across Futurebuilders at a charity fair and thought it sounded like something we might be interested in,” explains Gill Hare, Service Manager at First Steps. “The application form was incredibly simple, focusing us on the money we needed as well as what we have to offer. The response from Futurebuilders was quick and positive. Our Investment Officer, Paul, has been fantastic, providing us with ongoing advice and honest feedback. The fact that we can get in touch with the same person, who’s been with us through all of the issues we’ve faced makes such a difference.”

The investment package (£350,000 loan, £100,000 capital grant and £12,000 capacity building grant) has enabled First Step to move to a new larger and more appropriate building. They can now deliver after-school and holiday care to children with special needs, as well as provide advice to parents on available benefits through a Welfare Rights Unit Advisor.
