Hadfield Institute
The Hadfield Institute (formerly the Yemeni Economic and Training Centre, YETC) is a community-led education and training organisation supporting the Yemeni and BME community in Sheffield. The Hadfield Institute is a truly ‘cross-cutting’ organisation, providing support and respite care for carers and helping parents and children at risk of social exclusion access education, training and employment opportunities.
The complexities of the Yemeni culture in regards to loan finance meant a new approach for Futurebuilders and the Hadfield Institute, as Paul Davies, Investment Officer at Futurebuilders explains: “Culturally, the idea of taking out a loan was a very difficult concept for the trustees. We spent a lot of time explaining the process and reassuring them that their building wouldn’t be at risk. It was important that they had the confidence to take the proposal back to the wider Yemeni community and get agreement across the board.”
“By going through the application process we realised that, as an organisation, we were going to have to invest in ourselves,” explains Kate Attenborough, Chief Executive of the Hadfield Institute. “The investment will help support the refurbishment of our new centre, but we now also recognise the need to invest more in our staff. Ultimately we have been given a huge confidence boost. Any expansion is as much about confidence as anything else, and the whole Yemeni community is benefiting from it – we’re being recognised as a viable and important public service provider to the community.”
The total investment package included a £325,000 loan; a £75,000 capital grant and a £5,000 capacity building grant.
